The readings for the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost are listed below:

1 Kings 19:1-8
Ephesians 4:17 — 5:2
John 6:35-51

Elijah was being pursued by Jezebel for slaying the false prophets of Baal. God provides food through the angelic messenger sent to supply him nourishment and sustenance for His journey. We have in this a reminder of the heavenly food provided for us in the body and blood of Jesus, the heavenly messenger sent from God to bring us peace and deliver to our ears the Good News of forgiveness through His own blood. This food our Lord Jesus provides as He gives us His very body to eat which is the very bread of life that He gives for the life of the world.

In our Epistle reading, we continue to read St. Paul’s letter to the Church at Ephesus as He reminds us that God has called us out of this world and away from the futile thinking that characterizes the unbelieving masses. God has made us His children and given us His Spirit so that we would mirror His love and mercy and grace through our own lives and actions toward others.

In our Gospel, we continue to follow along and hear Jesus teach the masses whom He fed with the five loaves and the two fish on the shore of the sea of Galilee. This week we hear Jesus teach about the will of God which is this, “that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him would have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” It’s our Lord’s promise that He was sent into the world to rescue us and give us new life in a new heavens and a new earth through the living bread that comes down from heaven, His very flesh which is for the life of the world.

Join with us as we see Jesus – God in human flesh and receive from Him the forgiveness of sins this Saturday at 7:00 PM and Sunday at 10:30 AM.

*NOTE: Our Lord comes to us in His body and blood through bread and wine in Holy Communion on the second and last Sunday of each month. Out of love for our brothers and sisters in Christ and to exercise Christian responsibility with this precious gift, we ask that if you are not currently a member of our congregation or a congregation in altar and pulpit fellowship with our sister congregations in The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, you speak with our pastor prior to the service. To speak with our pastor, you may call our office at 810-846-4972.
